Tate House Guided Tours
One-hour tours offered in-season, Wednesdays-Saturdays, every hour on the hour from 10am-4pm (last tour at 3pm)
Guided tours focus on the lives of the Tate family who resided in the house from 1755 to 1803, and include the broader context of colonial Portland and the Stroudwater neighborhood where the house is located. House furnishings are interpreted to the period of 1760, and tours include information about our period objects, as well descriptions of the house’s architecture and the mast trade. Narratives about enslaved and Indigenous people are also included in these comprehensive, Colonial-focused tours.
Learn about the mast trade, Captain Tate’s responsibilities, and the family’s way of life in 18th century Maine, including the decades leading up to the Revolutionary War. Tour tickets are required for house entry and can be purchased at our Visitors Center or in advance (recommended in July and August).
